Measure Your Head in 3 Steps for Hat Size

3 quick steps
  1. Tool: Soft tape—or string + ruler if you have no tape.
  2. Wrap: Widest part of the head, ~1/8" above eyebrows and ears; keep level.
  3. Read & match: Note inches or cm, then use the converter or a fitted chart.

Step-by-step guide

1. Prepare your tool

A soft sewing tape is best. Otherwise use non-stretchy string, ribbon, or a phone cable plus a ruler or yardstick.

2. Position the tape correctly

Wrap at the largest circumference—usually mid-forehead and about 1/8 inch above the ears. Keep the tape level; check in a mirror.

3. Take the measurement

Snug but not digging in. Read inches or centimeters where the tape overlaps. That number is what charts and converters use.

Common mistakes to avoid
  • Too high or too low: Brow line or crown-only readings run small.
  • Pulling too tight: Leads to a hat that hurts—measure for comfort.
  • Stretchy tools: Elastic string stretches; use non-stretch material.
